Is there a central government office that holds a copy of my Deed Poll?
Not necessarily. You can choose to have your Deed Poll enrolled at the Supreme Court, but this can be an expensive process, and must be carried out by a solicitor. If you would like more information about instructing a solicitor to act on your behalf, please contact us at helpdesk@changename.co.uk.

Is a Deed Poll the only way that I can change my name?
No, there are other methods of notifying a change of name, for example, by advertising or statutory declaration, but a Deed Poll is the mostly widely recognised way of doing so and provides the documentary evidence to others that you have done so. We can provide you with a Deed Poll document - click here.

Are there any documents I cannot have changed by Deed Poll?
Yes, there are. The documents that you cannot change are; Birth Certificate, Marriage Certifcate, Decree Absolute Certificate

How long does it take before I receive my Deed Poll pack?
Once you have answered the questionnaire on the ChangeName website, and your details have been confirmed, then your pack should be with you in 8-14 days. However, if you need the pack urgently, for a small extra payment, we are able to provide an "express" service. See the ChangeName process for more information.

Can I change my name to anything I want?
Yes, you may change your name to any other name that you want as long as there is no intention on your part in doing so to deceive someone, and it is not for fraudulent reasons. However, you cannot have a name that; is impossible to pronounce, includes numbers or symbols, or includes punctuation marks (although a hyphen to link names together is acceptable as is an apostrophe, for example O'Gorman).

In addition to the legal restrictions above, ChangeName reserves the right to refuse to issue a Deed Poll where the new name could be considered obnoxious, or is likely to cause offence to others. In such an instance, we will refund any monies paid.

Can I obtain copies of the original Deed Poll?
We can provide "Certified Copies" of your Deed Poll. That is, copies that have been certified by someone in a professional capacity, for example, a doctor, or a solicitor etc. ChangeName can provide this service for you - please see the ChangeName process for more information.
