Introduction

There are a variety of reasons why you might want to change your name (it could be that you are just bored with, or dislike, your current one) and, generally speaking, this should not be a problem. As long as you do not want to change your name in order to deceive someone, and it is not for a fraudulent reason, then you are free to change your name to whatever new name you desire (exceptions).

Other than the automatic choice that a woman has of changing her name at marriage, there are other methods of changing your name (more details).

Although you could adopt a new name simply by using it, which is perfectly acceptable in day-to-day use, it gives very little in the way of documentary evidence that you have changed your name. This may cause problems when you come to inform the major organisations (e.g. banks and building societies), and government-related departments and offices (e.g. the Passport Office and DVLA, etc.), of your new change of name as they will generally want to see some form of documentary evidence. For this reason, a Deed Poll would be the more appropriate method as it gives all of the Documentary Evidence required by the major institutions and government departments.

Within ChangeName, we have devised seven simple steps that will help to steer you through the process of changing your name or your child(ren)'s name(s) in a straightforward and easy-to-follow manner. At the end of the process you will have all of the certificates and information that you need to inform everyone who needs to know your new name.
